MEXICO CITY

2008

A renovation and design project of a 1940s house in the Port of Los Angeles, California. This beach house was refurbished to suit a modern lifestyle: we removed a partition wall between the dining room and kitchen, adding a sense of spaciousness and improving the natural lighting, and we extended the wooden floor up to the kitchen for greater continuity. We replaced windows, framing the tree canopies and the outline of the sea on the horizon. For the bathrooms we added modern finishes and retiled them with a neutral color scheme, using patterns to conjure up the idea of sand and the calm of the sea. The custom-made kitchen has a light-blue-lacquer and marble finish, complete with a breakfast bar beneath lantern-like light fittings hanging from the ceiling. The exterior was plastered in polished stucco and tiles with organic outlines to simulate sand soaked by the sea.
